Qu'est-ce que le trafic criminel de 1 million d'euros de Bruxelles-Ouest nous dit réellement ?

The Brussels-West police zone said on Thursday, 3 September, that its 27-member Anti-Banditry Brigade had seized €1,003,980 in cash since the beginning of 2026. The unit, known locally by its French abbreviation BAB, also reported confiscating 28 kilograms of cannabis, 22.5 kilograms of cocaine and 920,000 counterfeit cigarettes while policing five municipalities in the Belgian capital.
For people living or working in Brussels, the figures offer a concrete measure of the illicit economy operating alongside ordinary neighbourhood life in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, Jette, Ganshoren, Koekelberg and Berchem-Sainte-Agathe. The brigade arrested 133 suspects during the period, according to Brussels-West police figures reported by VRT NWS, BRUZZ and BX1. Of these, 112 were referred to the Brussels public prosecutor’s office and 35 were subsequently placed under arrest warrants. Arrest or remand figures do not establish guilt; criminal responsibility must still be determined through the courts.
The brigade combines proactive patrols and checks with the first investigative steps after an arrest. Brussels-West police said this approach can lead officers from an initial interception to concealed vehicle compartments, house searches, drugs or cash. The BAB also acts as a Special Assistance Unit, supporting local intervention and investigation teams during higher-risk operations and providing a link to specialised Federal Police units.
That operational model matters because Brussels’ drug economy does not respect municipal or police-zone boundaries. In July, BRUZZ reported that the entire Brussels-West zone—not the BAB alone—had made 270 judicial arrests during anti-drug operations in the first half of 2026. Police chief Xavier Legrand described drug dealing and its associated nuisance as a continuing priority, while the zone’s director-general, Didier Demelin, said the results showed progress but required sustained work. The two sets of statistics overlap in period and possibly in cases, so they should not be added together.
The latest tally also arrives amid a sharper Belgian argument about how to curb drug-related violence. Federal Interior Minister Bernard Quintin and Justice Minister Annelies Verlinden have emphasised policing, investigative capacity and disruption of criminal finances. BRUZZ reported that Quintin promised 21 additional Special Units personnel for Brussels, while Verlinden announced extra support staff for the Brussels prosecutor’s office and plans intended to make criminal assets easier to confiscate. Brussels prosecutor Julien Moinil, meanwhile, has repeatedly argued that the justice system needs more personnel and resources to turn police interventions into durable prosecutions.
A different emphasis comes from prevention and harm-reduction organisations. Transit spokesperson Bruno Valkeneers warned through BRUZZ that reduced support for services assisting drug users could ultimately worsen public safety and increase wider social costs. Brussels parliamentarians Jan Busselen of PVDA-PTB and Celia Groothedde of Groen have similarly challenged cuts to preventive projects. Brussels Minister-President Boris Dilliès of MR accepts that prevention is necessary but argues that the heavily indebted region must evaluate spending and that no demonstrated causal line connects recent subsidy reductions to current shootings. These positions are not mutually exclusive: seizures can disrupt supply and recover evidence, while prevention, treatment and social work address demand and recruitment.
There is a wider European dimension, though this remains first and foremost a Brussels public-safety story rather than an EU-institutional one. The European Union Drugs Agency says abundant cocaine supply is associated with public-health harm, corruption and market violence across Europe. In June, the Council of the EU endorsed a 2026–2030 action plan combining enforcement with prevention and harm reduction, including a stronger follow-the-money approach. Brussels-West’s cash haul fits that logic, but a seizure total alone cannot show how much of the market has been dismantled, whether violence will decline or how much money will eventually be forfeited after judicial proceedings. The next meaningful indicators will be prosecutions, final confiscation orders, disruption of networks and whether residents experience a sustained reduction in dealing and violence.
Impact
